Designs from the Alhambra

April 30, 2015

The Alhambra Palace in Granada is justly famed for its wonderful architecture, standing out as the best preserved Moorish palace complex in Europe. The Nasrid rulers took advantage of the centuries of accumulated design knowledge and allowed their artists and architects ample room to express the best of Andalusi building expertise.  The intricate decoration on the walls consists of a combination of elements including Koranic inscription, geometric pattern, rhomboid-grids, glazed tiles and carved poetry - notably by Ibn Zamrak, the poet and politician who rose to become the Nasrid sultan’s private secretary in 1361.
